If there is a phrase that has become almost trite (especially after the release of Summorum Pontificum) it’s the following:

I never thought I’d see it in my lifetime.

However, to be perfectly honest I’d never thought I would see the following in my lifetime, and I am incredibly stoked.

The United States has swept an Olympic fencing event, particularly women’s sabre.  This is incredible.

While many of you caught the Opening cermonies on NBC, I was glued to an internet feed watching the preliminary rounds of the sabre tournament.  When that ended, I caught the replay on the USA network which lasted until about 1am.  Then I set the alarm and got up for the finals at 5 am.

Every second was worth it.

The final results:

Mariel Zagunis — Gold
Sada Jacobson — Silver
Becca Ward — Bronze

The US fencing program has made such strides over the last twenty years, it’s hugely satisfying.  I cannot wait to see the replays on TV tonight.  Olympic fencing on American TV, it’s like a dream.
